We don't have cable either. Check out your local library. Ours has a huge selection of kids shows from cable on DVD that you can check out for free. If your library doesn't have them, there's a good shot it's part of a larger group of libraries that you can search and borrow from for free. This not only allows your kid to watch a better selection of shows, but also allows you to pick & choice what YOU feel like sitting through.
